SheepTerm vs Termius

Termius is a polished SSH client with desktop and mobile apps, synced vaults and team sharing. SheepTerm is a free, narrower terminal built around network devices: SSH, serial consoles and output highlighting for switches, routers and firewalls.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Termius if…

  • You need the same hosts on a phone or tablet.
  • A team has to share vaults, credentials or session logs, or you need SSO and a vendor security report.
  • You want SFTP, Telnet or Mosh in the same app.
  • You work on Linux today.
  • You want fine control over serial parameters such as parity and flow control.

Choose SheepTerm if…

  • Most of your day is SSH and console cables to switches, routers and firewalls.
  • You want vendor-aware highlighting and per-host logs that you can search, at no cost.
  • You want sync without a subscription, kept in your own Google Drive.
  • You prefer an app whose Mac source is open under the MIT licence.
  • You want split panes, a device’s web page next to its console, and an AI panel that reads the output with passwords masked.

What to know about SheepTerm before you switch

  • It is young and narrow on purpose. SheepTerm does SSH, serial consoles, a local shell and device web pages in tabs. It has no SFTP file browser, Telnet, X11, RDP/VNC, port-forwarding manager or scripting engine.
  • The Mac app is not notarized. It is signed with a self-signed certificate, so on first launch you right-click the app and choose Open (or clear the quarantine flag once). It needs macOS 26.4 or later on Apple Silicon.
  • The Windows app is version 0.1. It is an unsigned portable zip, so SmartScreen may warn on first run (More info, then Run anyway). Its serial support has not yet been checked by the author on real COM hardware.
  • Licence. The Mac app is MIT-licensed and its source is on GitHub. The Windows build is free to use; its source is not published.
  • Linux is planned but not available yet.

Questions

Is SheepTerm a free alternative to Termius?

Yes. SheepTerm is free on Mac and Windows, including sync. It covers SSH, serial consoles and a local shell, but it has no mobile apps, no team vaults and no SFTP browser, so it replaces Termius only if those are not what you use it for.

Can SheepTerm sync hosts between my computers?

Yes, once you sign in with Google. Your hosts, groups, credentials, snippets and settings are encrypted with a passphrase you choose and stored in a private app folder in your own Google Drive. Sync is off until you sign in.

Does SheepTerm support serial consoles like Termius?

Yes, on both Mac and Windows. SheepTerm offers baud rates from 9600 to 230400 with fixed 8N1 and no flow control, plus Send Break. Termius exposes more serial parameters. See the serial console guide for the steps on a Mac.

Try SheepTerm alongside Termius

Free. Mac: macOS 26.4 or later, Apple Silicon, not notarized (right-click, Open on first launch). Windows: 10/11 x64, portable zip, unsigned (SmartScreen may warn).
